The San Francisco 49ers are heading into what could be a key game in the NFC playoffs race against the Buccaneers with their starting quarterback Brock Purdy set to be ruled out again and back-up Mac Jones likely to play despite a knee injury. The Bucs have prevailed in some tight finishes already this season and they look to have caught another break by facing the hobbled 49ers this week.
San Francisco’s third string QB is the undrafted Adrian Martinez, who has never thrown a pass in the regular season, so 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have his fingers crossed that Jones can recreate his excellent effort in last week’s 26-23 overtime win over the Rams.
The Bucs have their share of injuries too, but managed to overcome the Seahawks on the road last week despite missing starting running back Bucky Irving and wide receiver Mike Evans. Tampa Bay’s only loss was against Super Bowl champions the Eagles and the 49ers’ form has a more flimsy look to it, with each of their four wins coming by five or fewer points.
The Californian outfit’s defence has been poor and even in last week’s win they gave up 389 passing yards. With wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall still bothered by injuries and tight end George Kittle sidelined for at least one more week, the 49ers could struggle to keep pace with the free-scoring Buccaneers, whose QB Baker Mayfield has formed a dangerous connection with rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka.
