Heavy traffic expected as SC State Fair, Gamecock football collide Saturday

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Expect heavy traffic and packed parking lots Saturday as two major events converge at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds: the South Carolina State Fair and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks’ home football game against Oklahoma.
Kickoff is scheduled for 12:45 p.m., while the fair opens its gates at 10 a.m. With over 100,000 people expected to attend both events, South Carolina Highway Patrol is urging the public to plan ahead and be patient.
“Pack your patience,” said Master Trooper William Bennett. “It’s going to take some time to get everybody in, get them parked, and after the game, traffic’s going to be heavy and congested. We’re doing the best we can to get everyone out as quickly as possible.”
Troopers will be out in full force, directing traffic and assisting pedestrians. Bennett emphasized the importance of following instructions and being alert, especially when walking and driving near the stadium and fairgrounds.
“Look out for pedestrians,” he said. “Once we’re out of our cars and moving around on foot, let’s make sure we’re paying attention to crossing areas and wait for troopers to help us get across.”
Parking will be tight because some lots that have season passes for Gamecock games will not be valid. The Lexington Medical Center lot, located between the stadium and the fairgrounds, will charge $20 and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Tailgating will not be permitted on fair property.
Fair organizers say they’re close to matching last year’s attendance numbers and hope the busy weekend will push them over the top.
“We’re hoping folks come into the fair, then go enjoy the game, maybe come back after,” said Nancy Smith, general manager of the South Carolina State Fair. “Or we get another crowd that comes in later, depending on how traffic is moving.”
Visitors like Samantha Harvey, who traveled from Charleston, are excited to experience both events.
“We come up for all the home games,” Harvey said. “Adding the fair on top of it is the cherry on top. You’ve got to plan ahead, expect some delays, but we’re all Gamecocks, we’re all South Carolinians — it’s all worth it.”
