Michel Therrien to be head coach of Canada’s Spengler Cup team as coaching staff announced

The bench bosses for Canada’s 2025 Spengler Cup team have been decided.

Former Montreal Canadiens’ head coach Michel Therrien will take the lead, while Drew Bannister, Rob Cookson and Patrice Lefebvre will serve as assistant coaches and Jérémy Coupal will Canada’s video coach.

General manger Marc Bergevin worked with Therrien while with the Habs and was responsible for the Spengler Cup coaching decisions alongside associate general manager Stacy Roest.

“Michel’s extensive résumé as a head coach in the National Hockey League will allow him to be a great leader for our team, and Drew, Rob, Patrice and Jérémy bring many years of experience in the NHL, American Hockey League and Europe, as well as in international competition, and we look forward to representing Canada in Davos,” Bergevin said in a statement released by Hockey Canada.

Most recently, Therrien was the assistant coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. Before that, he had two head coaching stints with Montreal and one with the Penguins where he took them to the Stanley Cup Final.

Last season, Bannister was the head coach of the St. Louis Blues, while Cookson is an assistant coach with Lausanne HC of the Swiss National League.

Host HC Davos and the U.S. Collegiate Selects round out Canada’s group for the preliminary round. The 2025 Spengler Cup will open with a game between Canada and the U.S. Collegiate Selects on Dec. 26. The championship game will be played on Dec. 31.
