Aston Villa told to cough up £70m for Premier League sensation

Aston Villa are among the leading clubs being strongly linked with a transfer swoop on Igor Thiago

Aston Villa have been warned it will take a bid in the region of £70 million to wrestle 12-goal ace Igor Thiago away from Brentford next month.

Villa are among the leading clubs that are being consistently linked with interest in the 24-year-old Brazilian striker, who has taken off this season in the Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and teams from Italy and Spain are also being thrown into the mix about a potential transfer tug of war in January.

It has already been claimed that Unai Emery sees Thiago as a long-term replacement for fellow former Brentford star Ollie Watkins, as well as immediate competition and the replacement they wanted to land last summer for Jhon Duran, who left Villa last January.

Thiago cost Brentford £30m when he signed from Club Brugge in 2024 and will likely more than double their money if he goes to market.

Brazilian EPSN reporter Felipe Silva said: “Brentford has set the price to negotiate the Brazilian goal scorer Igor Thiago: £70m.

“The English team will not push to lose him but knows that offers are likely to arrive in the next window. Aston Villa, Tottenham, and two teams from Spain and Italy have made inquiries.”

There is extra interest back in Brazil because Cruzeiro, where he came through the youth ranks, will be due a 1.46 per cent cut of any fee.

Goal added last week: “Talk of a first call-up to the Brazilian national team grows with each round. He could even jump to the front of the queue for Brazil’s number 9 shirt before the 2026 World Cup.”
