Queen Mary of Denmark dazzles in a favourite diamond tiara as she leads the glamour at the New Year’s Day gala in Copenhagen

It was a night of spectacular glamour as the Danish royal family gathered for the annual New Year’s Day gala in Copenhagen.

Leading the House of Glücksburg was King Frederik X and his wife, Queen Mary, who celebrate two years on the throne this month. They were joined by the former Queen Margrethe II, who looked resplendent in the Nassut Tiara, and Frederik’s brother and sister-in-law, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie. Princess Marie stepped out in the Mauboussin Nuit Claire Tiara, which she has exclusive rights to wear but is still owned by Mauboussin, according to online jewellery authority The Royal Watcher. Queen Margrethe’s sister, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, opted for the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara, which was inherited from her husband’s family.

However it was Queen Mary of Denmark who looked especially regal in the Rose Stone Tiara – a new addition to the royal wardrobe, but one that uses heirloom jewels. The piece made its debut in December 2024, when Queen Mary wore the piece for a state banquet in honour of a state visit by Egypt. It was crafted from an unused rose-cut girdle in the Danish crown jewels.

Posting to the palace’s official Instagram ahead of the visit, the royal house shared a video showing Queen Mary taking part in the meticulous re-crafting process, as well as a caption explaining the historical significance of the moment: ‘With the Rose Stone Tiara, Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Collection are reliving a centuries-old tradition of reshaping the Danish crown jewels according to the changing needs of the times, while at the same time bringing the rose stone set, which is rarely used today, back to life.’
