Stoke City transfer news as interest steps up in keeper

Interest is believed to be accelerating in Stoke City back-up keeper Jack Bonham in a goalkeeping department shake-up.

Stoke have had to adjust priorities in the January transfer market following an injury to player of the season Viktor Johansson, who underwent a procedure on an injured shoulder last week.

Mark Robins immediately recalled Tommy Simkin from a loan at Leyton Orient and handed him the gloves, with the England youth keeper going on to keep three successive clean sheets in a rush of fixtures to start the new year.

Now Stoke are understood to be closing in on a loan deal for Republic of Ireland international Gavin Bazunu, who Southampton will be willing to let go after bringing in Dan Peretz on loan from Bayern Munich last week.

It will leave the Potters with a crowded keeper department and Bonham, who hasn’t started a Championship game since February 2024, further down the pecking order.

Bonham, aged 32, joined Stoke in 2021 and has made 65 appearances in all. He is the joint longest-serving player in the senior squad along with captain Ben Wilmot.

He is out of contract in the summer and has been on the radar of clubs at the top end of League One.

Frankie Fielding and True Grant are also on Stoke’s books.
