A well-rested Georgia basketball team is on the road for its first game in a week against an LSU team near the bottom of the SEC standings.
The Tigers, like the Bulldogs, haven’t played since Jan. 31 when they won at South Carolina in overtime.
Georgia (16-6, 4-5 SEC) will try to snap a season-long three-game losing streak on Saturday Feb. 7.
Coach Mike White did not rule out making changes to his starting lineup for this one.
The Bulldogs this week had two of the best practices it’s had all year, guard Jordan Ross said.
There’s been a focus on rebounding better on the defensive glass where Georgia ranks 335th in the nation, according to Barttorvik.com.
White wants Georgia to show more toughness on the glass.
“Our guys play hard. That said, we’ve got to play even harder,” White said. “We’ve just got to find a way to finish stops with defensive rebounds collectively.”
He’s also emphasized better shot selection for a team 13th in the SEC in 3-point shooting in league play at 31.6%. Georgia has taken the fourth most 3s in league play.
“We’re just trying to find ‘A’ shots,” Ross said. “’A’ shots are open shots, paint touches to kick out shots. The whole iso thing, jacking it up with 24 seconds on the shot clock, we’re trying to get away from that.”
The Bulldogs have lost five straight games in Baton Rouge, but their only game there under White was a one-point loss on Feb. 27, 2024.
LSU (14-8. 2-7 SEC) is 1-3 at the Pete Maravich Center in SEC play.
Tigers top scorer Dedan Thomas (15.3 ppg, 6.5 apg) will miss his seventh game this season with a foot injury.
“Without him, they play a really, really big lineup,” White said. “They’re another high-level, high defensive level team like these teams are in our league.”
Guard Max Mackinnon averages 14.6 points and is shooting 40.8% on 3-pointers. Six-foot-10 Mississippi State transfer Mike Nwoko scores 14.4 points per game with 5.5 rebounds per game.
