Presenter Sarah Greene has had a glowing career with shows like Blue Peter, Going Live! and more recently The Finish Line.

But the TV favourite has known heartache in her personal life, with the loss of her husband Mike Smith 11 years ago. She and Top Of The Pops presenter Mike had been married for 25 years when the television and radio presenter – known as Smitty to many – sadly died at the age of 59.

The star had undergone heart surgery and died of complications in August 2014.

Months after he passed away, probate records revealed that former BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike had left everything he had to Sarah.

Mike and Sarah were married for 25 years

It was reported at the time that there was £1,190,284 left in his will, which did not include any property or assets that he and TV star Sarah, 68, owned between them.

Sarah and Mike had started dating in the 80s and tied the knot in 1989, the year after they were both injured in a helicopter accident.

The pair had been on the way to visit friends, with Mike flying the helicopter, when they crashed into trees near their intended landing spot in in Gloucestershire.

Both suffered broken bones and Sarah spent weeks in hospital, but they went on to recover. Mike popped the question in the wake of the accident.

After Mike died, Sarah went on to find love again with ex-racing driver Robb Gravett, who was a friend of the couple.

The TV personality – who returned to our screens back in 2023 alongside Roman Kemp for BBC One quiz show The Finish Line – previously hinted that she thought her late husband had a hand in her new romance.

Speaking on the My Time Capsule podcast in 2022, she said: “I sort of know Mike is pulling so many strings in my life.

“He has undoubtedly been responsible for me meeting my beloved who was one of his oldest friends, who waited a certain amount of time but did keep leaving messages on the answering machine. I thought he was just being kind.”

She explained that she got what she called “a message” urging her to pick up the phone to Robb.

She said the message told her: “For God’s sake, Greeno, Robb is trying to make contact with you because he actually wants to take you out, not because he’s kind. So will you just get off your arse and go and answer the phone next time it rings!”

Sarah and Roman are back on our televisions this week with The Festive Finish Line, a series of Christmas specials that will see a host of well-known faces taking part in the contest.
