UVic grad’s app helps people hunt for grocery deals

A University of Victoria graduate is working to help people save money on groceries with a new app.
After graduating from UVic, Yashar Samim, went and developed Baski. The app provides a one-stop-shop of the best grocery deals among major retailers and local grocers, allowing consumers to compare prices.
To date, he estimates the app is helping people save about $150 a month.
“My first taste of entrepreneurship…It was trying to solve a problem that we all face. This is a subject that I’m personally very passionate about. Anyone that knows me knows I love two things – I love eating and I love saving money.

Samim’s app comes out just as Canada’s Grocery Code of Conduct rolled out this week.
The voluntary Grocery Code of Conduct is a set of rules within Canada’s food supply chain, primarily retailers and suppliers, that aims to bring fairness to business deals within the grocery industry and its supply chain.
Canada’s five largest grocers — Empire, Loblaw, Metro, Walmart Canada and Costco Canada — have formally registered.
More information can be found at the Grocery Code of Conduct website.
