National Popcorn Day: Get 5 gallons of popcorn for $5 at Upstate NY movie theater

One of the nation’s biggest movie theater chains is letting moviegoers get five gallons of popcorn for just $5 this month.

Cinemark announced the return of its “Bring Your Own Bucket” promotion in celebration of National Popcorn Day. This year, it will be a two-day event on Jan. 18 and 19, allowing customers to bring in any bucket, tub, bowl, cooler or other container and fill it with up to 400 ounces (ahem, 25 pounds) of movie theater popcorn for $5 (plus tax).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there’s a special hack for this year’s BYOB fun. Anyone who brings in a five-gallon Lowe’s bucket can get it filled up to the top, or about 650 ounces of popcorn. (Bucket liners will also be available upon request.)

That’s a huge savings, as an extra-large tub at Cinemark theaters currently costs $9.95 for 200 ounces of popcorn. All movie theater popcorn sizes will be $5, too, during the Jan. 18-19 event.

But the deal is only available at one movie theater in Upstate New York: Cinemark Tinseltown Rochester and IMAX. Located at 2291 Buffalo Rd. in Rochester, it’s the only Cinemark theater in New York state.

But hey, you could make a road trip to get five gallons of popcorn and bring it home with you to snack while watching anything you want, from “Stranger Things” to the NFL playoffs. Moviegoers do not have to actually purchase a movie ticket to take part in the BYOB deal, according to Cinemark.

And in case you’re planning on taking advantage of the five-gallon deal, Lowe’s has 69 stores in the Empire State including four in the Rochester area.

THR reports the partnership with Lowe’s — not to be confused with Loews theaters, owned by Cinemark’s rival AMC — includes a coupon for customers to satisfy “future popcorn cravings valid Feb. 1 through Feb. 26.” The movie theater chain is also offering a chance to win free popcorn for a year with an online popcorn bucket fill-up game through Jan. 19 at cinemark.com/popcornday.

National Popcorn Day is January 19, which is a Monday this year. Cinemark first launched the BYOB event last year when Jan. 19 was a Sunday, so they expanded this year’s celebration to two days to give moviegoers a chance to still get a huge amount of popcorn with a big-screen film experience on a Sudnay.

“Last year’s Bring Your Own Bucket event for National Popcorn Day reimagined what this holiday could be for all movie-popcorn lovers, as people showed incredible creativity with their vessels and made the celebration truly unforgettable for both guests and our theater teams,” said Wanda Gierhart Fearing, Cinemark’s chief marketing and content officer. “This year, we are thrilled to build on that fun by teaming up with Lowe’s to make the experience even bigger and better. With two full days of festivities as well as special sweepstakes and promotions, we cannot wait to see how much this year’s celebration will heat up.”

“Helpfulness is at the heart of the Lowe’s brand, and it shows up in the everyday moments customers share with family and friends — even a night at the movies,” added Jen Wilson, senior vp and chief marketing officer at Lowe’s. “Our iconic blue bucket brings utility and delight wherever it goes, including the theater. Teaming up with Cinemark is a fun, simple way to give families even more value from something they already rely on throughout the year.”
