Winter storm snarls air travel across US, including Newark Airport

A massive winter storm sweeping across large portions of the United States is snarling air travel, prompting widespread flight cancellations and delays this weekend.
Airlines have canceled hundreds of flights at Newark Liberty International Airport in anticipation of heavy snow expected to blanket the region. Over 9,000 flights have already been cancelled Sunday across the country.
Over 700 flights scheduled to depart from or arrive at Newark on Sunday on Sunday, Jan. 25 have been cancelled, according to the flight-tracking site FlightAware.
John F. Kennedy International Airport has cancelled 856 incoming or outbound flights so far for Sunday and Laguardia cancelled a total 830 flights.
Flight cancellations had already piled up across the nation on Saturday, Jan. 24, as snow began landing in states including Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee. By 4:30 p.m., 4,260 flights were reported canceled while over 15,000 were delayed.
The harsh winter weather is part of a larger storm bringing bring snow, ice and extreme cold from Texas to Maine. In New Jersey, snow is expected after 3 a.m. and could last until 6 p.m. Snowfall is predicted to reach between 12 and 16 inches in Northeast New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service. The storm could also bring strong wind gusts and sleet.
Cancellations were expected to grow throughout the weekend. Customers with plans for air travel should continue to monitor their flight status and be prepared for disruptions.
