Liverpool are in talks over a loan deal for defender Lutsharel Geertruida.
The 25-year-old Netherlands international is currently on a season-long loan deal at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, but discussions are now taking place around ending that agreement and facilitating a move to Anfield.
The versatile Geertruida is capable of playing either right-back, centre-back or a holding midfielder, with Liverpool’s interest stemming from multiple absentees in defensive positions.
Geertruida played under Liverpool head coach Arne Slot for three seasons at Feyenoord, whom he left in 2024 to join RB Leipzig.
Any deal would have the blessing of his loan club Sunderland, who also saw loanee Marc Guiu return to parent club Chelsea earlier in the season.
Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, the club’s two recognised senior right-backs, are both currently unavailable through injury while the absences of Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni respectively mean that depth in central defensive is thin outside of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk.
Geertruida has made 17 appearances for Sunderland in the Premier League, seven as a starter.
