Providence women’s basketball tops DePaul in Big East tourney opener

The Friars women’s basketball team beats DePaul to win four straight Big East games for the first time since 1995-96.
Sparked by the play of Sabou Gueye, the No. 7 seed Providence College women’s basketball team defeated No. 10 seed DePaul, 69-55, in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Providence defeated DePaul in the Big East Tournament for the first time, having been defeated the previous three meetings.
Gueye finished with a career-high 31 points on 15-26 shooting and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. She entered the game 17-points shy of 1,000 for her career and reached the milestone before halftime.
Also factoring heavily in the win was Teneisia Brown, who posted her team-best fourth double-double of the season. with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Gueye scored the Friars first eight points of the game and took their first lead (13-11) on a three-pointer by Sophi Hall at the 3:41 mark. The first quarter ended in an 18-18 tie when the Friars’ Princess Moody hit a floater at the buzzer.
DePaul had an 8-0 run in a 40-second span in the second quarter to take a 30-23 lead.
A Brown layup ended DePaul’s run and sparked an 11-0 stretch by the Friars which put them up 34-30 with 2:16 left in the quarter. Nine of the 11 points by PC were scored by Gueye. PC outscored the Blue Demons 18-13 in the frame and took a 36-31 lead at halftime.
PC expanded its lead over DePaul in the third quarter with a 7-0 run and ended the quarter outscoring the Demons 8-1 over the final 3:24 of the frame to take a 55-39 lead.
DePaul outscored PC, 16-14, in the final quarter, but the Friars finished with a double digits win.
PC will face No. 2-seed Villanova in the Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 7 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Peacock and NBC Sports Network.
