One Kitchener high school is in lockdown and three public schools were placed in hold and secure Monday morning as police investigate a weapons-related call in the area.
The schools impacted are:
- Grand River Collegiate Institute, which is in lockdown.
- Crestview Public School, which is in hold and secure.
- Chicopee Hills Public School, which is in hold and secure.
- Stanley Park Public School, which is in hold and secure.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service says officers are in the area of Indian Road and Heritage Drive and people in the area should expect an increased police presence.
The Waterloo Region District School Board said in a notice on its website that students at Grand River Collegiate Institute are contained to their classrooms and movement within the schools is limited. Access to the school is restricted when a lockdown is in place.
“We ask that parents, families and caregivers of students at this school please refrain from calling the school during a lockdown as our staff’s main priority is to keep students safe,” the board said.
The school board’s policy says a lockdown is used the secure a school when a major incident or threat of school violence is happening within the school.
A hold and secure is when there is an ongoing situation outside the school, but it’s not related to the school directly.
In this situation, the school continues to function normally, with the exterior doors being locked until the situation is resolved.
