Mikayla Matthews revealed in the fourth season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives that she and her husband, Jace Terry, have separated. In their announcement, which dropped Thursday in episode nine, Matthews said she hoped the separation would be temporary.
“Jace and I stayed up late last night talking out the pros and cons of separating,” Matthews said in a confessional. The couple, who talked openly about their intimacy issues during seasons three and four, continued to hash things out while Matthews packed up to move into co-star Mayci Neeley’s house for the time being. “I think it’s hard anytime you bring up the stuff with the sex and the intimacy,” Matthews said. “My nervous system is already in fight-or-flight, and I’m already maxed out. My bucket is full.” When they talked about what the timeline of their separation might look like, Terry said, “Maybe we don’t get back together until you feel like you can commit to our relationship.”
Throughout season four, Matthews talked about how a health flare-up had affected the couple’s intimacy challenges, saying she felt pressured to put more energy than she had into working on their sex life. “It makes me sad that I’m not able to meet his needs, and I know there’s only so long that he can be patient with me for,” she said in one confessional.
Neither of them have weighed in on their relationship status since the episodes dropped, but Terry has been present in Matthews’s social-media posts over the past few months. (In one, she and Neeley joked about their husbands crashing their “romantic Valentine’s Day date.”) Terry also showed up in Matthews’s Wednesday carousel promoting season four. “Filming at 4 weeks postpartum, and during the worst health flare I’ve had in over a year and a half — was definitely not the plan, but LFG I guess,” she wrote. “I’ll be sharing more soon about my journey with mold illness, moving out of my house, and the postpartum guilt I struggled with while going through such a massive health flare filming.”
