An Abbotsford construction company was issued a $5,000 WorksafeBC penalty for a “repeated and high-risk” violation in failing to ensure workers used fall protection at a Chilliwack worksite.
The database listing administrative penalties from WorkSafeBC includes a $5,000 fine issued to Build 4 U Construction Ltd for violations at a Chilliwack job site on Feb. 19.
“WorkSafeBC inspected a worksite where this firm was framing a house and observed two workers installing roof trusses,” the release of March 11.
“One worker, a representative of the firm, was standing on the top chord of an erected truss, and the second worker was on the top plate of the third floor. No fall protection was in place, exposing the workers to fall risks of up to 9.1 metres or 30 feet.”
Falls can result in some of the most serious work-related injuries, said WorkSafeBC officials, and the numbers show that more than 44,000 injury claims were filed related to falls from heights in the 2015 to 2024 window.
“The proper use of fall protection equipment — in addition to planning, supervision, and training — can reduce or eliminate the risk of falling.”
Regulations require workers to use fall protection systems at heights of three metres (10 feet) or more, or where a fall from a lesser height could result in serious injury.
