Iowa women’s basketball sees first transfer portal departure

The Iowa women’s basketball program learned of its first planned transfer departure this cycle on Friday morning.
Junior guard Kennise Johnson announced her intentions to enter the transfer portal. The 5-foot-4 guard out of Joliet, Illinois, signed with the Hawkeyes in the 2023 signing class.
Johnson appeared in 20 career games, totaling nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and one steal on 3-of-10 shooting in her Hawkeye career.
“To the Hawkeye fans, thank you. You embraced me and showed me love no matter what my role looked like, whether I was on the court, on the bench, or battling injury. That kind of support means everything, and it never went unnoticed,” Johnson wrote in her transfer portal entrance announcement.
Johnson missed the entirety of the 2024-25 season after suffering an ACL tear near the end of her freshman season. While Johnson is listed as a junior, she could seek a medical redshirt and wind up with two seasons of eligibility remaining at her next stop.
The two-week transfer portal window opens one day after the national championship game on Monday, April 6.
