Survivor 50 episode 6 recap (updating live)

UPDATING LIVE:
Okay, everyone! It’s merge time! Let’s go!
I am so ready for episode 6 of Survivor 50 tonight and not just because Jeff Probst and CBS are promoting it as a history-making episode that will “change the game forever.” We already knew this was going to be an unprecedented season and with 17 castaways going into the merge, something big has to happen tonight.
And after last week’s double elimination, there’s no doubt we’re in for something memorable tonight. So far, each episode of Survivor 50 has surpassed the last, so if we just sent two people home, I’m ready to see if the merged tribe now has to vote out three people. It makes perfect sense based on the teaser the show has been dropping over the last couple of days.
But with a handful of our players going into the merge with advantages (and disadvantages), it’s anyone’s game to win or lose.
“The Blood Moon” – A mysterious boat arrives delivering an exciting message, “Drop your buffs!” A mad dash ensues when castaways discover that an advantage is hidden deep in the jungle. This week’s mouthwatering challenge reward lifts spirits, but only briefly. A true Survivor first, the dreaded blood moon leads to a historic tribal council, on SURVIVOR 50. Drop your buffs…
Rizo Velovic is on cloud nine after he successfully helped to eliminate his biggest adversary on Cila beach. But Dee Valladares is doing damage control, telling Jonathan Young that they couldn’t include him in the vote out of fear he’d tell Charlie Davis the plan, but they still all want to work with him. While the two are chatting on the beach, Jonathan notices a boat approaching in the distance.
The castaways at Kalo beach also have a boat approaching, both of which provide treemail instructing them to drop their buffs, collect their things, and get on the boat to their new home. Dee sees this as her opportunity to play the game even harder.
Vatu gets treemail informing them the rest of the remaining players are on their way to join them on the new merge beach. Ozzy Lusth pulls Emily Flippen aside to give her the full truth of his game before the rest of the players arrive. He tells her about his idol in order to solidify trust with her and Christian Hubicki—who he also reveals his idol to. The three are ready to move forward together as Cila and Kalo arrive via boat.
Christian’s excited to welcome everyone to camp, but most importantly he’s glad to be reunited with Rick Devens. Meanwhile, Rizo is starstruck arriving at a beach with so many Survivor legends. Ozzy passes out yellow buffs to everyone as they circle up at camp to kick off the merge.

Chaos in communication
Devens reviews all the advantages in the game that he knows of: the idol Christian sent Aubry Bracco—that he’s taking credit for—as well as his fake idol at Tribal Council. Genevieve Mushaluk asks Cirie Fields what she knows about Aubry and Cirie confirms her idol. Very quickly, the entire merged tribe knows Devens sent Aubry an idol and Genevieve sent Ozzy an idol.
When Rizo asks Genevieve if she sent him the idol, she denies it, wanting to ensure if he’s voted out, no one knows it will come back to her. Cirie tells Ozzy about Rizo’s idol as well. She realizes that the new era way of playing is that it’s okay to vote with your enemy for one or two votes whereas in the old school era, it was all about trust and staying true to your people.
Already, those two ways of thinking are clashing as Johnathan makes the rounds to see who can trust. Coach Wade is weirdly obsessed with Jonathan’s body—saying that’s what he wanted to look like on his first season—and a lot of the other old school players and Joe Hunter are open to working with him, knowing that he played a loyal game in Survivor 42.
First twist of the episode is revealed
Another boat arrives with a note saying there’s a twist hidden in the jungle and the first person who finds it, claims possession over it. All 17 players immediately start running through the jungle looking for the advantage. Ozzy finds the note that says he’s going to Exile Island and he has to choose one player to go with him. He tells Christian and Emily who guesses that it means he’s probably going to be safe through the next vote.
Ozzy decides the best player to take with him is someone no one knows very well so he has a chance to learn all his secrets and tells Rizo to get on the boat to Exile with him. Rizo is both thrilled and terrified of what this might mean for his game.

Immunity challenge and even more twists
The remaining 15 players go to the challenge arena where the “Chimney Sweeps” challenge is set up with the three original tribe colors. Host Jeff Probst greets everyone and tells them that 63% of fans voted for there to be big twists, so they’re bringing in the biggest twist that’s ever happened in Survivor history.
He shares that three players are going to be eliminated later at Tribal Council, dividing them into three groups of five to compete. All three groups are going to Tribal Council to vote someone out. The last player remaining for each group wins immunity while the last player remaining overall wins immunity for themselves and reward for their entire team. The reward? Applebees at the sanctuary.
Another huge twist is revealed, the jury will start after tonight’s votes, which means everyone eliminated tonight won’t make the jury. Jeff divides the players into three groups for the challenge.
Teal: Dee Valladares, Cirie Fields, Emily Flippen, Colby Donaldson, Coach Wade
Purple: Genevieve Mushaluk, Aubry Bracco, Christian Hubicki, Rick Devens, Joe Hunter
Orange: Jonathan Young, Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick, Tiffany Ervin, Kamilla Karthigesu, Chrissy Hofbeck
Emily is the first to drop, during the transition. Devens, Jonathan, and Colby drop during the second transition. Cirie steps out, leaving Coach vs. Dee for the teal team. Coach previously lost this challenge to J.T. Thomas in Tocantins. Stepping down to the final foothold, Coach falls out, with Dee winning immunity, but she steps down, giving up reward.
Tiffany, Aubry, Joe, Genevieve all drop at once, leaving Christian to win immunity, but he falls out, meaning the orange team will win reward. Kamilla drops out, leaving the final two: Stephenie vs. Chrissy. Stephenie wins after Chrissy has to step out.
Winners: Dee Valladares, Christian Hubicki, and Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick win immunity with the orange team walking away with reward as well.
All three teams are torn apart, returning to three different camps to strategize without additional input.

Exile Island for some, sanctuary for others
Ozzy is living his best life at Exile Island and bonds with Rizo. Before leaving for Exile, Cirie told Ozzy to seal things with Rizo, so he shares his idol knowledge with him. In return, Rizo tells him about his own idol, earning Ozzy’s trust. Ozzy is convinced it’s him, Rizo, and Cirie until they end.
The orange group arrives at the sanctuary to be greeted with drinks and appetizers. They agree to put the game on hold while they enjoy their meal, but of course they’re internally strategizing because the game is never on hold. Tiffany hopes everything goes to plan as she was originally aligned with Jonathan and Kamilla—targeting Chrissy who has yet to try and work with her in 13 days.
