Carla Connor has married Lisa Swain

Coronation Street fans have been left “super emotional” after Carla Connor and Lisa Swain finally tied the knot in Thursday’s episode.

The couple first got together in late 2024 and have gone on to become a social media sensation known as Swarla during that time. The fan favourites have endured numerous ups and downs during their time together so far and their engagement was immediately blighted when Lisa’s wife Becky, who was said to have been killed in the line of duty in 2021, arrived back from the dead having been part of a corrupt police cover-up.

Her cack-handed attempts at winning Lisa (Vicky Myers) back included kidnapping Underworld boss Carla (Alison King) and locking her up in an airing cupboard before moving her to a shipping container. After a rescue mission that aired as part of the programme’s crossover with Emmerdale, Becky (Amy Cudden) went to prison and Lisa and Carla were able to get their relationship back on track.

One passionate fan said ‘I feel like my hearts gonna launch out my body’ as they watched the scene unfold

In emotional scenes that were released early on ITVX, Carla and Lisa finally walked down the aisle as Roy Cropper, who has become a father figure to Carla over the years, and Lisa’s daughter Betsy walked behind the.

During the vows, Carla, who has been married five times before, kissed Lisa’s hand and she said: “I love you. We’re our own love story, aren’t we? Our own little team and we’re not just looking in each other’s eyes, we’re looking in the same direction. Standing side-by-side, forever. Please.”

They kissed, and were pronounced as wife and wife as The Turtles classic Happy Together played as their wedding song. During her long history on the show, Carla, who first appeared in 2006, has usually taken the surname of her husband but now both she and Lisa have officially taken the name Connor-Swain. To top everything off, Carla’s employees had thrown a surprise party at the factory to act as the wedding reception.

The whole thing is a major first for the soap, which began in 1960, because no lesbian wedding has taken place successfully beforehand. In 2011, Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) left Sian Powers at the altar, and in 2019, Rana Habeeb and Kate Connor were saying their vows under the rubble of the collapsed factory roof when Rana died.

Fans immediately took to social media to react to the scenes. One fan wrote on X: “when happy together starts playing after Carla saying forever please, I feel like my hearts gonna launch out my body and like I want to throw up all in one!”

Another said: “First and foremost Congratulations lovebirds Noone can deny how powerful their bond truly isVicky was phenomenal in this episode. It’s no secret I hated the damage Becky SL caused, but I’m relieved to hear an acknowledgement. Touching vows, intimate setting.”

A third wrote: “I thought it was so beautiful and meaningful for the street to organize the party for them. Carla Connor deserves it after everything they’ve already put her through. I’M SUPER EMOTIONAL.”

But all the happiness was clearly set to be short-lived as, just before the pair enjoyed their first dance, a scream in the distance was heard. Carla brushed it off as “just foxes,” but fans will know that the programme is gearing up for a murder week which will see either Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances Brown) Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon), or Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn) killed off amid their villainous storylines.

Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks said of the big week: “It was a very complicated storylining process! I did lose a bit of sleep and my hair went a little bit greyer. Usually in a murder week you’ve got one victim, then the suspects – we had five potential suspects had to make sure all the stories aligned, made sense and they were all getting to the right place and coming together.

In the build-up it’s gearing up and the momentum is really strong, it could be any of them. Stars aligned to get to this juicy week. The flipside is going forward, there’s so many consequences for each individual character.

Then we’ve also got the who did it, that big story as well going forward as well as unpacking what’s going on with all those other characters. Very complex, but satisfying and enjoyable as well.

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
