How Shirley Ballas transformed her body at 65, and the exact three-step routine she follows daily

At 65, Shirley Ballas has the fitness, energy and joie de vivre of someone decades younger. So how does she do it – and what are the main lessons anyone hoping to amp up their fitness in later life can take from the Strictly judge?

Shirley has a laser focus on fitness and staying well. On the Comfort Eating podcast, she shared that she had a simple daily dinner: chicken flavoured with lemon. ‘That’s what I have on Strictly. I have that every year, every week,’ she says. ‘Your body is your temple,’ she told Hello!. ‘If you’re not feeding it right, don’t expect it to do good things.’

And she revealed that when Strictly filming is imminent, it’s time to pay attention to her diet. ‘No sugar, no sweets, no treats, no bread. Just really good, solid food. I very much watch what I eat. If it’s green and grown in the ground, I’ll eat it.’

She also shared that she takes an ice bath every morning. ‘It makes me feel revitalised, helps me think clearly and really kicks off my day.’

But preparing for last year’s Netflix hit show Celebrity Bear Hunt meant doubling down on fitness. She told the Daily Mail: ‘I go to the gym, I get my 10,000 steps in before seven o’clock in the morning every day. At home I get up super early before I go to work, I do yoga, I do the Peloton bike, I do the running machine.’

‘You know, it’s not easy at 64,’ said Shirley in an interview early last year. ‘I’m not like a competitive dancer anymore but I teach dancing on my feet every day for 12 hours. So, yes, I’ve done my bit, I think. I’ve done the best that I can for it.’

And even away from the cameras, Shirley makes sure her fitness doesn’t slip. Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, she revealed that she does ‘an hour and a half in the gym every day, religiously’.

Ice baths, workouts, 10,000 steps daily… it’s little wonder she’s transformed her fitness. ‘I’ve got more energy than anybody put together, really,’ says Shirley. ‘I’m a goer, not a sitter. I want to be able to up and go.’
