Philadelphia Airport Expects 9.4 Million Travelers This Summer

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) officials are projecting the airport will handle a record-breaking number of travelers this summer as the city hosts the FIFA World Cup, the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the MLB All-Star Game.
The PhillyVoice reported that approximately 9.4 million travelers are expected to pass through the airport from June through August, a 6.3% increase from 8.8 million last year. July is expected to be the busiest month, with approximately 3.2 million travelers.
The city is anticipated to welcome about 1 million tourists this summer, driven by high-profile sports events and the semiquincentennial celebrations. Philadelphia has been highlighted as a top travel destination by major outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
“As of today, we are still anticipating a very big summer, and we have not seen any real impact to the schedule yet because of jet fuel costs,” said PHL Chief Commercial Officer Kate Sullivan.
City & State Pennsylvania reported that security screening wait times have returned to normal after spring’s federal funding impasse, which led to scores of National Transportation Safety Administration security workers calling out sick and long security lines for travelers. This summer, Sullivan said travelers can find updated security wait times on the airport’s website and on readouts in the ticketing areas.
To make the travel experience as inviting as possible, PHL is launching Live Music at PHL, a summer program featuring local artists starting in the Terminal B/C food court. Five additional performances are scheduled through early June.
The airport also plans to open an exhibit between terminals C and D exploring the history of the Philadelphia Union through the team’s jerseys. Soccer and baseball pitch simulators are in place to recognize the World Cup and the MLB All-Star Game.
