In Off Campus, there’s plenty of in-show situations for fans to poke at, like why are we concerned with outside love stories when the four hockey boys living together have so much chemistry? Let’s explore that further! Instead, viewers online have started questioning the real-life ages of the series’ two leads, Ella Bright (who plays aspiring songwriter Hannah Wells) and Belmont Cameli (who plays college hockey star Garrett Graham). There’s a near-ten-year age gap between Bright, 19, and Cameli, 28. During her appearance on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Bright addressed the concerns by saying while she does understand them, she finds them quite funny. “Listen, I came into this job and the chemistry reads with more than enough information and knowledge and understanding of what this role and show required,” Bright explained. “I just fell in love with Hannah and these scripts immediately. Like, there was never a question that I wouldn’t want to do this.”
She further explained that Off Campus showrunner Louisa Levy made a point to make her feel comfortable. “All of the Hannahs auditioning knew it would be partial [nudity],” Bright said. “Everyone had full understanding of what we were going into.” Earlier this month, Levy addressed the concerns of Bright’s age after she revealed she was 18 during filming. “I had a conversation with Ella before we closed her deal to make sure she knew what was coming. She’d read the book, so she already understood, but I walked her through everything and made sure she was comfortable and confident. If I had felt she wasn’t ready, I would have pumped the brakes immediately,” Levy told Variety. “We have an extraordinary intimacy coordinator, Kathy Kadler, who had conversations with not just Belmont and Ella but with all the actors. We never did anything that made anyone uncomfortable before we ever rolled a frame of camera.” Sometimes, a job is just a job.
