Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens are still searching for an impact signing during the 2026 offseason.
That said, Marc-Olivier Beaudoin finds Vladimir Tarasenko’s situation intriguing for the Canadiens.
To be clear, the journalist is not presenting him as a savior.
He is very clear about that. At 34 years old, Tarasenko is no longer the star player he once was.
But the idea is worth considering.
Beaudoin raises an interesting point and puts forward an intriguing proposal for the Canadiens.
“I wonder what it would look like alongside his compatriot Ivan Demidov.”
Why Vladimir Tarasenko makes sense as a low-risk fit for the Canadiens
The logic behind the pairing makes sense.
Two players who speak the same language, with a natural goal scorer playing alongside a playmaker.
“A natural scorer playing alongside Demidov-it could work.”
Beaudoin points to still-respectable numbers.
Tarasenko is coming off a 47-point season, including 23 goals, in 75 games.
His size is also an asset.
At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, the veteran still brings a strong physical presence.
One interesting detail adds credibility to this scenario.
Tarasenko has already signed in Ottawa before, so playing in Canada does not intimidate him.
Beaudoin even suggests contract figures.
A short-term deal, one or two years, at less than $4 million per season.
It would be the kind of low-risk contract that could pay off.
If he clicks with Demidov, Montreal wins. If not, the contract expires quickly and the Canadiens can simply move on.
That said, Demidov, at 20 years old and coming off a 62-point season, deserves a winger who can finish the chances he creates regardless of who that player is!
