Manchester United stand to benefit after agreeing on a sell-on clause for Mason Greenwood when they sold the forward to Marseille in 2024, as he now looks set to move again

Manchester United could soon be readying themselves for a boost to their transfer funds after it was reported that former striker Mason Greenwood had agreed a five-year contract with Roma. Currently at Marseille, Greenwood has widely been linked with a departure from France with the Serie A side a leading candidate.
The 24-year-old is said to have accepted a contract worth a guaranteed £3.9million a year, per Calciomercato.com. Now, Roma are set to make their first formal offer to Marseille for the player’s signature, according to Sky Sport Italia.
The Italian side are said to be preparing €45m (£38.6m) offer for the Ligue 1 side, including bonuses and a sell-on clause. Marseille want €55m (£47.1m), but it is claimed that two clubs will be able to find common ground.

Greenwood departed Old Trafford in a £26.6m move in 2024 after United concluded he could no longer remain at the club. The academy graduate was suspended by United when he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022.
The forward denied the charges, which were later dropped, but found himself on the fringes at Old Trafford before he left for Marseille following a season on loan at Getafe. United are understood to have inserted a sell-on clause in their agreement with Marseille, entitling them to up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee.
Greenwood has not been short of suitors after scoring 26 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions in 2025/26. Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Fenerbahce and Juventus have all been credited with interest.

French publication L’Equipe claimed that Atletico head coach Diego Simeone requested the striker. The Argentine wants reinforcements after already losing Antoine Griezmann and Nico Gonzalez, with the exit of Julian Alvarez still looking possible.
But Roma have had a long-standing interest. In May, they had already made contact with Greenwood’s father, and the project had captured the interest of the Marseille attacker.
According to reports in Turkey, two Fenerbahce officials have travelled to France to ‘finalise’ a transfer for Greenwood, however.
Greenwood has previously indicated he wanted to stay at the Stade Vélodrome. Speaking after being named in Ligue 1’s team of the season, he said: “This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months, but individually, I think I’ve had a good season.
“There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it’s nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches and, for me, it’s one of the best leagues I’ve played in. I hope I can stay.”
