Newcastle United in advanced talks over Portuguese-based transfer target

The Magpies have honed in on Hornicek as they look to make a second goalkeeping signing this summer following the earlier arrival of Ewen Jaouen.

The Czech Republic international was the subject of a failed approach from Hull City this summer, turning down the offer of a move to the MKM Stadium. Hull are understood to have matched the release-clause sum contained within Hornicek’s contract, but the 24-year-old opted against joining the Tigers.

Benfica have reportedly held talks with Braga officials this week, but Newcastle’s recruitment team, led by sporting director Ross Wilson, have made a move of their own as they look to add to their goalkeeping ranks.

Aaron Ramsdale, Max Thompson and John Ruddy all left Tyneside at the end of last season, and the Magpies are understood to be willing to listen to offers for Nick Pope, who has been named on the bench for this evening’s friendly against Bristol City.

While reports elsewhere have suggested Newcastle have triggered Hornicek’s release clause, sources claim that is not the case. However, talks with Braga have reached an advanced stage and the two clubs are expected to be able to reach an agreement over a fee.

Hornicek was in European action for Braga last week, starring in his side’s 1-0 win at Serbian club Zeleznicar Pancevo in a Conference League qualifier.

The second leg is due to take place tomorrow evening, but as things stand, Hornicek is not expected to play in that game.

He began his youth career in the Czech Republic with Sokol Dobrikov and FK Pardubice, and joined Braga’s academy set-up in 2019.

He made his senior Braga debut in 2021 at the age of 19 and has gone on to make 88 senior appearances for the Portuguese top-flight side.
