Liam Thompson inches towards Derby County exit amid transfer talks

Liam Thompson is closing in on a move to Mansfield Town from Derby County as he looks set to leave the club for the League One promotion hopefuls.

DerbyshireLive revealed how the Stags’ move for the academy graduate had been put on ice earlier this month with Thompson travelling with the Rams’ squad for their pre-season trip to Austria.

But Mansfield remains determined to land one of their top targets this summer, and it is now expected that a deal to take the midfielder to the One Call Stadium is more of a case of when, not if, the move is completed.

Thompson was left out of tonight’s friendly against the Stags as John Eustace named a team that was made up of fringe first-team and academy players which included Kenzo Goudmijn, Lars-Jorgen Salvesen and Ryan Nyambe.

The 24-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, but with Derby expected to add significantly to their squad in the coming weeks, first-team chances are remote.

Derby will not stand in the way of his departure, which would end a long association with the club after he came through the academy ranks to break into the first team under Wayne Rooney.

Derby are expected to bolster their midfield options with David Ozoh still on the list of targets with the midfielder currently away in Italy with Crystal Palace.

The Premier League club will not allow the midfielder to return to Derby on loan with a permanent deal firmly on the agenda.
