What a huge win! In my opinion, this was as close to a must-win as we’ve seen. There was no way the Mariners wanted to be trailing two games to one with Game 4 on the Tigers’ home field and all of the pressure on them trying to survive.
Logan Gilbert was absolutely brilliant, giving up just one run on four hits in six innings. If not for a poor throw by J.P. Crawford, he wouldn’t have given up any runs.
Even more important was to see the rest of the lineup chipping in and finding some success heading into Game 4. Seeing Geno Suárez go deep as well as Crawford are huge moments that can pay off in upcoming games. Throw in hits from Victor Robles and Randy Arozarena, and that’s as complete of an effort as we’ve seen in this series so far.
The only downside was the relief appearance by Caleb Ferguson, which turned a seven-run lead into a nailbiter and forced the Mariners to use Andrés Muñoz when he most definitely should’ve had the night off.
Outside of that, brilliant efforts out of the bullpen by Matt Brash and Eduard Bazardo. Let’s just go ahead and win this thing tomorrow!
This is the rotation that was promised. For the last few years we have heard about how no one wants to face the Mariners’ rotation in the playoffs, and now it has come fruition.
Logan Gilbert was masterful, and in that much ballyhooed “third time through the order” fear, all he did was get Kerry Carpenter to hit a ground ball that could have easily been a double play.
We knew the lineup was deep – they proved that during the closing surge that brought them to this No. 2 seed, and they backed it up again tonight.
The pressure, the long playoff, all of that is gone. The Mariners are simply a good freaking baseball team.
