It’s not unusual for Liverpool fans to keep an eye on their former players, especially those who left under mixed circumstances.
Darwin Nunez’s move to Al Hilal last summer was one of those that raised eyebrows.
Once seen as the future of Liverpool’s attack, the Uruguayan striker never quite hit the levels expected at Anfield despite moments of brilliance.
Now 26, Nunez is rebuilding his confidence in Saudi Arabia, a league that has grown rapidly in profile, with several former Premier League names competing in the Saudi Pro League.
For Al Hilal, the competition is fierce, with clubs like Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad spending big and raising standards across the league.
After a short spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, Nunez returned to action against Al-Ettifaq and immediately reminded fans of his potential.
Leading the line alongside Marcos Leonardo, he produced his best display yet for Simone Inzaghi’s side.
Over 90 minutes, Nunez scored twice and registered an assist in a 5–0 win.
His work rate stood out as much as his end product, he pressed from the front, battled for possession, and showed sharp movement inside the box.
Statistically, he made 35 touches, took all three of his shots on target, and created three chances.
Fans in Saudi Arabia have quickly embraced him.
“You are a special player,” one supporter wrote after the game.
Another commented, “Congratulations – the best is yet to come! Darwin Nunez delivered a true masterclass today, a complete striker’s performance, strong in both defence and attack, focused and selfless.”
You played for the team, not for the headlines, a perfect example of passion and teamwork.”
Others went even further, calling him “the man of the match and the best striker in the league.”
Even back in Europe, he still has admirers.
For Liverpool fans, seeing Nunez thriving elsewhere may bring mixed feelings, but it’s hard not to be pleased for a player who never stopped giving his all.
